Bexley Village has its own parking zone, and it is a short one: a single hour, Monday to Friday, 10am to 11am. Arrive before ten or after eleven and the van can usually sit close to your door. We plan Old Bexley jobs round that hour. Bexley station is on the line through Sidcup to Charing Cross, and the B12 bus links the village with Bexleyheath.
The village on the Cray
Down the hill from Bexleyheath, Old Bexley is the original village, strung along the River Cray with Hall Place just to the north of it. DA5 is a different postcode and a different kind of house from the semis up on the heath. The High Street and the streets off it form a conservation area around St Mary’s church, the one with the odd octagonal spire, and many of the houses there are older than anything in Bexleyheath’s 1930s roads.
Older houses, awkward stairs
Age brings its own carpet jobs. Staircases can be narrower and some turn a corner with winders, which we clean tread by tread with the hand tool. A short or oddly shaped staircase can be priced at £4 a step. Some houses in the conservation area have no drive, so we ask about access when you book and carry enough hose to reach from the road.
Draughts are the other thing. Older timber floors let air rise up past the skirting, and the carpet edge filters out the dust, leaving a grey line round the room. We give those edges a targeted treatment. They lighten a good deal, though a line decades in the making rarely vanishes in one go; the stain removal page explains why.
Rugs and good wool
If you have a good wool rug, perhaps one that has been in the family for years, it gets a dye test on every colour before any water goes near it, and the method follows from what the cloth shows. Details are on our rug page.
Prices match the rest of the area: bedrooms £36, living rooms £43, a flight of stairs £41. Crayford, the other town on the Cray, is just downstream.
